Gollum Jade - SHIPPABLE!
Gollum Jade - SHIPPABLE!
Plant: Jade Plant [Crassula ovata ‘Gollum’]
Vessel: 8oz or 16oz Mason Jar
Other ingredients: Succulent soil, foraged sea pebbles, perlite, peat moss.
About: If you know me, you know I’m a massive nerd, and Lord of the Rings is precious to me. So, when learning that there were Gollum Jade plants and Hobbit Jade plants, I knew I had have one.
Gollum Jade gets it’s name from it’s resemblance to the fingers of one of my my favorite Sci Fi characters of all time.
This lil buddy is obsiouvly tormented with some sort of schizophrenia or maybe Borderline Personality Disorder?
Watering: Water 1-2x per month or as soil dries out by adding water, letting it seep in until the upper part of the soil becomes visibly moist. A tiny bit of moisture at the bottom is okay, but the succulents should NEVER be sitting in wet swampy soil.
Keep in mind, the general advice for outdoor succulents in a cool to moderate climate is to water once per week in the summer and once per month in the winter allowing the plant to dry out between waterings, so as to mimic their native conditions of hot stormy summers and cold dry winters. Indoors, and in terrarium style planters, succulents will require even less water.
Lighting & Temperature: Bright, indirect light is ideal. These are generally intended for indoor use, or in a protected, covered outdoor space.
In these little mason jar homes, temperature should stay in the 70’s on average - basically, average indoor temperature.
Occasional swings up into the 80's and even down into the 50’s are absolutely fine. The main concern is that since these terrariums are in mason jars, care should be taken to ensure the roots aren’t exposed to adverse conditions. For instance, best not to leave it in a spot where the sun beats down on the glass all afternoon - don’t wanna steam those roots!
One last thing…
You’ll see a lot of variation in the size and plumpness of the leaves based environment of the plant. The leaves will shrivel up and start to look a little wrinkly if it’s thirst, or they’ll become soggy like rotting produce if the plant is too wet. Most Jade plants are very resilient and can come back from a long time of not being watered, but chances of survival in cases of overwatering are much more slim.
